We are reaching out to creative members within your community (eastern NC) including musicians, sculptors, writers, painters, crafters and more. In 2007, I was inspired by a publication found on the Regional Technology Strategies website. Titled, “Arts, Culture and Design in Rural North Carolina”.To read the full report, visit http://rtsinc.org/publications/pdf/Rural_Arts.pdf In response, I created several promotional avenues where specific artists gained recognition and additional revenue streams in New Bern, NC. Seeing the success in New Bern, I am willing to expand the opportunities to all creative people in Eastern North Carolina. Our publication “A Brief History of Artists in Eastern North Carolina” will contribute to your community as we take another step in building the creative economy. Please help to get the word out. Greater Good Gallery will bring in the new year with live music, a book launch and artistic demonstrations during ART crawl through Greater Good Gallery on Fri., Jan. 13th from 5-8pm. Enjoy a live performance by local musician, Magfirah Dahlan. Growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia, Magfirah Dahlan has traveled and lived in sixteen countries on four continents. She moved to New Bern, North Carolina in 2013 to be a Philosophy professor at Craven Community College after completing her PhD at Virginia Tech. Having successfully written and published academic work, she began her singer-songwriting career in 2016 by writing forty songs in the span of nine months. As an emerging artist in the pop folk genre, she has been described as a ‘lyrical genius’ who combines philosophical insights and poetic beauty, with a voice that is unassuming yet haunting. Magfirah has performed in New Bern, Goldsboro, and Washington, DC. Ben Alden Watford will be signing books to launch his newest title, “James Stanley Jones vs The Klan.” The book begins during the late twenties and thirties. The story deals with two teenagers in a small village in Western North Carolina during the Jim Crow era. It is during the period when social contact between races is nonexistent, especially in rural America. Two individuals of different races find themselves drawn to each other. When one of them is murdered, the other is suspected. The mystery of the death and the resulting trial, fueled by hatred of the Klan, reaches the climax. Carol Jones and Lisa Bisbee Lentz will be demonstrating oil painting techniques. The project began when Bob Holliker visited New Bern in 2016. Lisa Bisbee Lentz; Lee Hood; Carol Jones; the Giorgianni's (Dom, Tammy & son); Kristen Moffit; and Judy Schychowski have all contributed dandelion paintings to this cause of support. Lisa Bisbee Lentz explains, " My dad, grandfathers, uncles, cousins and friends have been in the military. I'm thankful everyday for their contributions to keep us safe. Allowing me the freedom to paint. It's a blessing. I know that these military brats have to move from place to place, start new friendships and schools. I imagine it's not easy for military kids to adjust quickly. We paint these dandelions to show our support." Why a Dandelion?Bob Holliker is honoring those who followed their military parents serving our nation. Holliker explains, "The concept for the BratPin began in 2009 when I contacted my US Congressman, Bob Latta (R/OH), and asked him why America’s Military Brats have never been recognized for their – for our – service to our nation."
Holliker found this: “The official flower of the military child is the dandelion. Why? The plant puts down roots almost anywhere, and it’s almost impossible to destroy. It’s an unpretentious plant, yet good looking. It’s a survivor in a broad range of climates. Military children bloom everywhere the wind carries them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely. They’re ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new adventures, new lands and new friends. Experts say that military children are well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant, and extremely resilient. Military children have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world and in every color, and that education doesn’t only come from school. They live history. They learn that to survive means to adapt, that the door that closes one chapter of their life opens to a new and exciting adventure full of new friends and new experiences.” ~ Anonymous FOLLOW THE MILITARY BRATS: Brat Pride on facebook or visit http://bratpride.com TO PARTICIPATE: Please submit your painting of a dandelion to Greater Good Gallery, 228 Craven Street, New Bern, NC 28560. We'll ship the paintings to Bob Holliker and he will offer them for sale on bratpride.com. If you painting sells, you will receive $21.
