Next month is the Valentine ARTcrawl on February 14th, 5pm to 8pm! Special event going on at theGreater Good Gallery, one-night-exhibit called "RAW REFLECTIONS" in honor of the love of ART, not suitable for all ages. Bring your I.D.
  • The exhibit will feature life drawings of nude models, symbols of passion and silouettes of love in the most raw forms and may not be suitable for all ages.
The works of art will be sketches, paintings and sculptures of life-drawings and a conceptual nature of our human experience. Lisa Bisbee-Lentz, owner of Greater Good Gallery, gathered the artists works for the exhibit to educate our community on two perspectives: (1) the time-honored traditional history of life-drawing foundations and (2) the modern contemporary views of conceptual art where symbols and experience of installations capture the viewers' attention.
Lisa Bisbee-Lentz explains, "In my encounters of drawing or painting the human form, I found that the study of lines and shadows, became larger than any pre-conceived notions that I brought to the easel. The experience of life-drawing transcended into a scientific documentation. Plus, it was an opportunity to experience the tradition of life-drawing in a similar manner as our Renaissance masters had participated. Even if the end-results of my drawings were meager, my appreciation for the determination of the Renaissance masters greatly expanded."

Below are excerpts from articles that I found online relating to "life drawing" where people share their opinions on its benefits to our culture and even the science of how our brain works. None of the works will be obscene, yet we will keep social etiquette to limit the audience to adults-only. You won't want to miss this show, as it is up for one-night-only. - Lisa Bisbee Lentz

Never Underestimate the Power of Life Drawing"
by Glenn Vilppu

"Figure drawing has been the standard measurement of an artist's skills for hundreds of years, probably from the moment we first started capturing the living world around us. The great masters of the past were first story tellers. They had to be able to create figures that the viewers could empathize with so that stories were brought to life with a sense of realism and believability. "

11 Reasons for Drawing Models & Attending Life-Drawing Sessions
by Sharon Allicotti

“If you can draw the figure, you can draw anything,” is an oft-repeated (and very true) adage.
"This time-honored practice promotes greater empathy for the human subject in both its physical and psychological dimensions, offering insights into how these two aspects combine to portray emotion and convey meaning in figurative art."

Should Christians attend life drawing classes (drawing nude models)?

Excerpt from a response by danielh41: [Nudity, even public nudity, was never condemned as sinful in the Bible. In fact, God commanded the prophet Isaiah to go naked throughout the land for three years. "...at that time the LORD spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking naked and barefoot. Then the LORD said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush..." (Isaiah 20:2-3 ESV). Apparently, Isaiah wasn't the only one who received such a commandment. Look at King Saul in 1 Samuel 19:24 (ESV): "And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”" Judging from the people's reaction, prophesying and public nudity seemed to go hand-in-hand in Old Testament times. Would God command someone to do something that was sinful? I think not. ]

The nude figure and Christianity

Excerpt by PCNIELSEN: [I recently, perchance, ran across Gordon College’s policy and reasoning for the use of nudes in their drawing classes; Gordon is a private, faith-based institution. Some key points in their article are excerpted here:

“We have chosen in the Art Department at Gordon College to work respectfully with the human figure attempting to bring honor and glory to God in the process. We base this, in a Christian context, on a time-honored professional practice, holding the belief that the human form is the crowning achievement of God in Creation – worthy of our expert knowledge, and analogous to the scientific knowledge of the human body in medicine and biology. In our tradition as artists it is seen as the linchpin of our practice of visual knowledge. If you can accurately and expressively draw or paint or sculpt the human form you can draw anything.”

A Few Real Secrets of Drawing
by Miles Mathis

" What you are seeing, cast upon your retina, is a picture, a two-dimensional image, very much like a picture inside a camera. Yes, the brain works like a fancy camera, remember? Of course you have two eyes and therefore two images, and the brain uses both images to create depth, as most people also know. But the brain creates depth with other tricks, like shadow analysis and color analysis and so on. That is why the brain gets tricked sometimes. The brain is not given a 3-D image, it is creating one."
