We are reaching out to creative members within your community (eastern NC) including musicians, sculptors, writers, painters, crafters and more. In 2007, I was inspired by a publication found on the Regional Technology Strategies website. Titled, “Arts, Culture and Design in Rural North Carolina”.To read the full report, visit http://rtsinc.org/publications/pdf/Rural_Arts.pdf In response, I created several promotional avenues where specific artists gained recognition and additional revenue streams in New Bern, NC. Seeing the success in New Bern, I am willing to expand the opportunities to all creative people in Eastern North Carolina. Our publication “A Brief History of Artists in Eastern North Carolina” will contribute to your community as we take another step in building the creative economy. Please help to get the word out. Greater Good Gallery will bring in the new year with live music, a book launch and artistic demonstrations during ART crawl through Greater Good Gallery on Fri., Jan. 13th from 5-8pm. Enjoy a live performance by local musician, Magfirah Dahlan. Growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia, Magfirah Dahlan has traveled and lived in sixteen countries on four continents. She moved to New Bern, North Carolina in 2013 to be a Philosophy professor at Craven Community College after completing her PhD at Virginia Tech. Having successfully written and published academic work, she began her singer-songwriting career in 2016 by writing forty songs in the span of nine months. As an emerging artist in the pop folk genre, she has been described as a ‘lyrical genius’ who combines philosophical insights and poetic beauty, with a voice that is unassuming yet haunting. Magfirah has performed in New Bern, Goldsboro, and Washington, DC. Ben Alden Watford will be signing books to launch his newest title, “James Stanley Jones vs The Klan.” The book begins during the late twenties and thirties. The story deals with two teenagers in a small village in Western North Carolina during the Jim Crow era. It is during the period when social contact between races is nonexistent, especially in rural America. Two individuals of different races find themselves drawn to each other. When one of them is murdered, the other is suspected. The mystery of the death and the resulting trial, fueled by hatred of the Klan, reaches the climax. Carol Jones and Lisa Bisbee Lentz will be demonstrating oil painting techniques. The author and illustrator will be on location at Greater Good Gallery to sign books. Refreshments will be served.
DATE: Thursday, July 14th TIME: 5:30 to 7pm LOCATION: Greater Good Gallery, 228 Craven Street, New Bern, NC The Greater Good Gallery will host a book launch party and book signing for My Little Plastic Bag on Thursday July 14 at 5:30 pm. The book with text by local poet Sam Love and illustrator Samrae Duke tells the story of what happens to a plastic bag when a little girl throws it out the window. Through brightly colored illustrations a child can follow the plastic through the ecosystem into the ocean where small bits are eaten by fish. Finally the chemicals in the plastic come back to Amy’s family in the fish her family eats. The story is based on a poem by Sam Love that appeared in his poetry book, Converging Waters and in Duke University’s Eno magazine. “I get really angry when I see the plastic pieces that the mowers cut up on the side of the road and I wanted to create an educational book for young children that helps them understand there is no ‘away’,” according to Love. “This book can be valuable to teach young people about the problems plastic trash creates in our aquatic environment,” says Travis Graves, Lower Neuse Riverkeeper. For more information, email Sam Love at sam@samlove.net |
